Chapter 14

Lydia called in some favors and the female insurance agent came out that morning. She and Lydia had worked together before. Manda Nichols was in her forties and very competent—Paislee knew immediately that she was in good hands. It was a matter of paperwork, and so many pictures of the destroyed kitchen and ceiling.

“You have a place tae stay? I can see aboot getting upfront funding tae cover additional expenses,” Manda said.

“I have a place, thank you. Uh—how long will this take?” Paislee had a bad feeling. “A week or two?”

Manda laughed. “Arenae you a doll? It will be a month or two at least. These pipes will need tae be replaced throughout the house. We’ll hire a remediation team tae dry the water, and prevent further damage.”

“Oh—I can’t be away that long.” Paislee shook her head.

“Yes, you can,” Lydia said. “We’ve already taken over the personal items tae the new house this morning. You bring what you need tae the flat. We will make it work.”

Paislee gulped.

Grandpa put his hand on her shoulder and squeezed, offering his support. She wasn’t alone. Paislee nodded. “Okay.”

At eleven, Manda was done with her pictures and had offered to take care of filing the paperwork. Manda winked at Lydia. “I see a safe new waterpipe and drain system for your best friend. I’ve heard so much aboot you, Paislee.”

“Thank you,” Lydia and Paislee said in unison as they walked Manda out.

Hamish arrived as the woman left. He got out of the car, wearing jeans, boots, and a Henley.

“He’s so cute,” Lydia murmured from the stoop. “Hi, Hamish. I hear you had a wee bit of a shock last night.”

“It’s not every evening that I’m covered in plaster,” Hamish admitted. He looked at Paislee as if to see what she’d shared with Lydia or Grandpa.

It wasn’t that their dinner dates had been a secret—just quiet. And the kiss? No kissing and telling on her end.

“Hamish. I said that I would call you.” Paislee had already emotionally pushed him back to square one.

“I wanted tae help if I could,” Hamish said. He wasn’t retreating as she’d hoped.

“She’s going tae stay at my old flat while her pipes are replaced,” Lydia said.

Paislee glared at her best friend. “Want tae take an ad out on a billboard next?”

Lydia laughed. “Dinnae be cross. I know you were fair fond of those old countertops, my love, but this is heaven’s way of telling you tae upgrade. Change is nothing tae be afraid of. Hamish, have you met my husband, Corbin? Corbin, this is Hamish McCall, headmaster at Fordythe Primary.”

Lydia stepped back to allow Hamish inside the house. Paislee fumed as she understood her friend’s message but wasn’t sure she agreed with it.

Change. She’d had plenty of change and was sick of it.

She went inside and Grandpa wisely said nothing when normally he had an opinion on everything.

As she shut the door, she jumped when a knock pounded. She opened it, and was surprised—but not really, the way things were going—to see Jerry.
